A petition calling for the impeachment of President Donald Trump has amassed more than 100,000 signatures within days of his return to the White House for his second term. The petition, launched by the nonprofit Free Speech for People, highlights concerns over alleged abuses of power and violations of the U.S. Constitution.
Why Is the Petition Gaining Support?
The petition underscores the deep political divisions in the country and ongoing concerns about Trump’s leadership. Despite his acquittal in two previous impeachment trials during his first term, this new effort suggests that many Americans are still deeply opposed to his actions and policies.
The petition calls for an impeachment investigation into the following allegations:
- Violations of the Emoluments Clauses, which prohibit a president from profiting from government entities or foreign nations.
- Alleged “unlawful and corrupt” conduct during his campaign.
- Pardoning of individuals involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
New Grounds for Impeachment
Since Trump’s return to office, the petition claims that he has committed additional impeachable offenses, including:
- Signing an executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for certain children born in the U.S.
- Unlawfully firing inspector generals and members of government agencies, including the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and the National Labor Relations Board.
- Allegedly abusing his power by seeking retribution against perceived political enemies.
Alexandra Flores-Quilty, campaign director of Free Speech for People, emphasized the urgency of the situation, saying:
“The overwhelming support for impeachment shows that the American public is not willing to accept King Trump. We need bold leaders in Congress willing to stand up and hold Trump accountable for his abuses of power.”
Republican Response
While Republican lawmakers largely support Trump’s agenda, some expressed concerns about his decision to pardon January 6 defendants convicted of violent crimes. However, House Speaker Mike Johnson praised Trump’s leadership in a letter inviting him to address Congress:
“America’s Golden Age has begun. Thanks to your strong leadership and bold action in the first days of your presidency, the United States is already experiencing a resurgence of patriotism, unity, and hope for the future.”
Will the Impeachment Effort Succeed?
Despite the petition’s growing support, the likelihood of a successful impeachment is slim. With Republicans controlling both the House and Senate, any attempt to impeach Trump for a third time faces significant obstacles.
John Bonifaz, co-founder and president of Free Speech for People, warned of the consequences of inaction:
“Trump keeps taking lawless and unconstitutional actions. He has been in office for less than two weeks, and the impeachable offenses continue to pile up. We must demand accountability when a president abuses his power.”
As the political climate remains polarized, the push for a third impeachment highlights ongoing tensions surrounding Trump’s presidency. Whether or not the petition leads to concrete action, it signals that calls for accountability and scrutiny of Trump’s administration are far from over.
